Action 2: Dredged sediments characterization

According to results from the previous phase,  according with ISPRA (Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) sampling and analysis protocols, information regarding the qualitative and quantitative characterization of sediment in areas of interest as well as specific characteristics of the area itself, was gathered through a bibliographic study of all relevant documentation and contacts with representatives of local agencies involved in the area of the project. The database was developed with database design software such as “Visio and “ArcGIS Diagrammer”. The database file is compatible with all versions of Access (from the 2000 version onwards) so that it can be interrogated by the most common GIS software compatible with ESRI database files. Given the aims of the research and the reuse for which sediment is being characterized, it is important to avoid chemical-physical alterations and/or potential contamination of material during sampling. Therefore, the following actions were implemented:

  • sampling strategies for physical-chemical and eco-toxicological sampling of harbor sediment;
  • sediment dredging and sampling plan in the four selected harbors;
  • definition of a protocol containing methods and criteria for sampling, conservation and the analysis of sampled sediment.

Summary of the Action

Action 2.1  Evaluation of available information on harbour sediment quality

In this phase was collected information  about quantitative characterization of sediments in the area of interest, and specific characteristics of the area, through the study of the appropriate bibliographic documentation and contacts with representatives of local authorities in the area including the project. Actions A.2.2, A.2.3, A.2.4

for the objectives of this research is important to avoid alterations in chemical-physical and / or potential contamination of the sediment during sampling. Sampling procedure incorrect and badly preserved samples may alter the final analytical results. In order to get reliable test results it’s important to maintain the integrity of the sample. For this purpose:

  • were prepared sampling strategies for physico-chemical and ecotoxicological  analysis;
  • was prepared a plan for dredging and sampling sediments in the 4 selected ports;
  • was defined a protocol containing the criteria and methods for sampling, storage and analysis of sediments taken.

In the nex web pages of the actions you will find a summary of the work done and the documents containing details of the criteria to be adopted for the removal of sediments; technical requirements for the choice of the positioning system, methods to be used for analytical determinations on samples. These documents have been made in according to the procedures generally used for the characterization of environmental remediation sites of national interest.
